What can/do you do at a memorial?
The following is a guide,
based on a typical memorial service, to some of the places where piping can add
to the day. Not all services will have all these components.I've done as much as
everything you see here and as little as only one item. I consider my
inclusion in the service to be an honor.
In the
church/funeral home:
-
Prelude - Up to 15-20 minutes. Sometimes, the Scottish small pipes are
better for this time as they are quiet.
-
Seating of Family
-
Entrance of Clergy
-
Processional for Casket/Cremains
-
Hymn, or background for memorial video
-
Recessional to Hearse
-
Postlude - as Family and Friends leave
At the Graveside:
-
Pipe
in the Cortege - I will usually play from the moment the first car arrives
until the priest is ready. This includes the placing of the casket on
the funeral bier.
-
Hymn
-
Postlude - I will usually pipe until the last car leaves the area.
Any or
all of this may be done with appropriate planning.
